Those born with down syndrome are often treated as if they are not “normal” or are different. They do not abundantly receive the same opportunities as those who do not have down syndrome.

However, there are those people like Katie Meade who make people look past down syndrome and create the opportunity for themselves. Katie Meade is a model who recently landed a job for a beauty brand, Beauty & Pinups, she is the face of one of their new products.

Katie is proving that those individuals with down syndrome are beautiful as well and should be treated as such. She is 32 years old and lives in Des Moines, Iowa. In an email to Today, Meade describes the experience, “It was amazing,” she said in her email. “It was fun trying on clothes and getting ready for the photos. I felt so special! It was really cool to feel like a true model.”

Besides this modeling campaign, Meade has won a gold medal at the Special Olympics and is an ambassador for the non-profit, Best Buddies International, which helps those living with disabilities find work and friends.

Beauty & Pinups donates to the organization. They were very excited to have Katie model for their new hair mask.

CEO of Beauty & Pinups, Kenny Kahn, said this of the photoshoot in an interview with Today, “She is a very special person and it comes across in her photos,” he said. “She represents not just hope; she represents reality.”

Katie had her own words about the cover saying, “They make me feel welcome and loved,” she said. “They have given me opportunities to show the world that people with disabilities like beauty and fashion, and like to look good like everyone else.”

God bless Katie and The Beauty & Pinups team hopefully this will inspire other brands to embrace those living with disabilities as well.
