MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An 83-year-old man has died after he was shot and carjacked overnight.

Police say it happened just before 1 a.m. in the 2000 block of Prospect.

The man was found lying in the street.

Police say the man was getting out of this car when someone shot him and then got into the man’s 2005 Ford Taurus and drove off.

Police confirmed the man has died. Family identified him as Eddie Walker.

The stolen car had a Tennessee license plate of 524DD12.

Police say the vehicle two hit-and-run suspects were driving matched the same Tennessee tag numbers and was the same make and model as the one that was stolen from Walker.

Horn Lake Police and the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department were searching for the suspects in the area around Goodman Road, Dunbarton Drive and State Line Road.

They took both into custody in connection with the carjacking and are holding them in the DeSoto County Jail until they can be extradited to Memphis, DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco said.

“Why would someone? Someone — He had made it home. He wasn’t in the streets. He had made it home and had made it to his house. Someone came out in front of his home and killed him,” one of his daughters said.

“They didn’t have to stop. You know? Just took the car and just went ahead. Don’t kill him. He’s 83 years old. What he’s going to do?”

Walker’s daughters said he was a good dad and grandfather — a good person.

“Just like an angel. Always taking care of other people, always lending a hand.”

If you went to Piccadilly or Gandy’s Barber Shop– you’ve probably seen him.

Back in the day, Walker rubbed shoulders with the greats — like Issac Hayes and Muhammad Ali — before he retired as an interior decorator.

“He was involved in a lot of things. So he just — we going to miss him being around.”
